Lest we forget

As we remember today those who sacrificed so much so that we can live in peace i reflect on how I taught this subject matter this year.

I always find this a difficult topic to approach. We talk about soldiers and war but I'm always concerned that little ones will go home frightened. I try to place a focus on peace more than war. We make poppies, write peace stories ( grade 1/2) and create finger paint peace signs (kinders). We talk about how it is a day to take seriously and it amazes me how well they handle themselves during the service.

As part of my social studies classes I hope to help my students to learn how lucky they are to live where they do and be thankful for everything that they have. I teach so many wonderful kids and I'm so thankful to be able to live in a safe country where I can get up every day and have the opportunity to do what I do.

Thank you to those who served and those who currently serve our country to give us freedom and to keep us safe.
