Lest we forget

As we remember today those who sacrificed so much so that we can live in peace i reflect on how I taught this subject matter this year.

I always find this a difficult topic to approach. We talk about soldiers and war but I'm always concerned that little ones will go home frightened. I try to place a focus on peace more than war. We make poppies, write peace stories ( grade 1/2) and create finger paint peace signs (kinders). We talk about how it is a day to take seriously and it amazes me how well they handle themselves during the service.

As part of my social studies classes I hope to help my students to learn how lucky they are to live where they do and be thankful for everything that they have. I teach so many wonderful kids and I'm so thankful to be able to live in a safe country where I can get up every day and have the opportunity to do what I do.

Thank you to those who served and those who currently serve our country to give us freedom and to keep us safe.

Busy busy busy

Wow! What a busy time of the year!

In my rural school Halloween is a big deal! Students prepare songs and poems in their classes for a Halloween concert. It's always a big turn out and the kids love it. My kindergartens this year did a fabulous job! Both our poem and song I found at

DLTK HOLIDAYS

Such a great website for poems that the students just love. We sang Humphrey the blue nosed pumpkin and our poem was called pumpkin time.

Once Halloween is over its a quick turn around to Remembrance Day. We learned about what Peace is and created Peace signs and a recipe for peace (I <3 Pinterest).

On top of everything it's report card season! Whew! And before we know it.... Holiday concert time (starting to practice the songs next week)!

Maybe things will slow down in January... But do they ever really?
